Waist Circumference
LOINC 8280-0 · cm
What it is
Waist circumference measures the distance around your waist. It is a simple gauge of abdominal fat, which sits around your organs.
Why it matters
Abdominal fat is more strongly linked to metabolic and heart risk than weight alone, so waist size adds useful information.
What high values can mean
A higher value indicates more abdominal fat and a higher risk of metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.
What low values can mean
A lower value generally reflects less abdominal fat, which is favourable for metabolic health.
How to improve it
Regular activity, balanced eating, less refined sugar and alcohol, and good sleep gradually reduce waist size.
Food & lifestyle
A diet lower in refined carbs and alcohol with more vegetables, fibre and protein, plus activity, reduces abdominal fat.
Preparing for the test
Measure around the bare midsection at the level of the navel, after breathing out gently, without pulling the tape tight.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss a high waist measurement with a clinician as part of your metabolic and heart-health picture.
