What it is
Neutrophils are the most common white blood cells and your body's first responders against bacterial infections.
Why it matters
Their count is a key indicator of infection, inflammation and immune capacity.
What high values can mean
A higher count commonly reflects a bacterial infection, inflammation, physical stress or recent intense exercise.
What low values can mean
A lower count (neutropenia) can increase infection risk and may follow some viruses, medications or marrow conditions.
How to improve it
Counts usually normalise once an infection or stressor resolves; a low count needs its cause addressed medically.
Food & lifestyle
General immune-supporting habits help; there is no specific food that targets neutrophils.
Preparing for the test
Part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential; fasting is not required.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss a very high or low neutrophil count with a doctor, especially a low count with fevers or frequent infections.
