What it is
Monocytes are white blood cells that clear dead cells and microbes and help coordinate the immune response.
Why it matters
Their count adds information about chronic infection, inflammation and recovery from illness.
What high values can mean
A higher count can occur with chronic infections, inflammatory conditions or during recovery from infection.
What low values can mean
A lower count is less common and is usually interpreted in the context of the full white-cell picture.
How to improve it
Counts generally settle as the underlying infection or inflammation resolves.
Food & lifestyle
General anti-inflammatory habits — good sleep, balanced diet, not smoking — support healthy immune balance.
Preparing for the test
Part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential; fasting is not required.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss a persistently raised monocyte count with a doctor, interpreted with your whole CBC.
