VO₂ Max

LOINC bllod:vo2-max · mL/kg/min

What it is

VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. It is a key measure of aerobic (cardio) fitness.

Why it matters

A higher VO2 max reflects better cardiorespiratory fitness, which is strongly linked to long-term health and longevity.

What high values can mean

A higher value reflects strong aerobic fitness, generally considered very favourable.

What low values can mean

A lower value reflects lower aerobic fitness, which can often be improved with training.

How to improve it

Regular aerobic exercise, including some higher-intensity intervals, gradually raises VO2 max.

Food & lifestyle

Consistent cardio, interval training and overall activity improve aerobic fitness over weeks to months.

Preparing for the test

Often estimated by a wearable from heart rate and pace, or measured in a lab test; estimates vary by device.

When to talk to a doctor

VO2 max is a fitness metric, not a diagnosis; check with a clinician before starting intense exercise if you have heart concerns.
