Lipid panel
VLDL Cholesterol
LOINC 9830-1 · mg/dL
What it is
VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is carried by particles that transport triglycerides. It is usually estimated from your triglyceride level.
Why it matters
VLDL is one of the artery-clogging particles, so it adds to cardiovascular risk alongside LDL.
What high values can mean
A higher value usually tracks with high triglycerides and a higher cardiovascular risk.
What low values can mean
A lower value is generally favourable.
How to improve it
Because VLDL follows triglycerides, the same steps — less sugar, refined carbs and alcohol, more exercise — lower it.
Food & lifestyle
Reduce sugary foods, refined carbs and alcohol; favour fibre, fish and unsaturated fats.
Preparing for the testFasting required
Usually calculated within a lipid panel; fasting (9–12 h) is typically requested — follow your lab.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss an elevated VLDL with a doctor, usually together with your triglyceride result.
