TIBC

LOINC 2502-3 · mcg/dL

Ranges

Reference range: 240450 mcg/dL

What it is

TIBC (total iron-binding capacity) measures how much iron your blood could carry — essentially the number of available "seats" on the iron-transport protein.

Why it matters

It helps interpret iron status, since the body makes more transport protein when iron is scarce.

What high values can mean

A higher value often reflects iron deficiency, as the body increases its iron-carrying capacity to grab more iron.

What low values can mean

A lower value can occur with iron overload, inflammation or some other conditions.

How to improve it

TIBC follows iron status; correcting an iron deficiency typically normalises it.

Food & lifestyle

Iron-rich foods with vitamin C help when iron is low; TIBC mainly reflects the body's iron need.

Preparing for the testFasting required

A blood test, often with iron studies; a morning, fasting sample may be preferred — follow your lab.

When to talk to a doctor

An abnormal TIBC is interpreted by a doctor with iron, ferritin and transferrin saturation.
