NT-proBNP
LOINC 33762-6 · pg/mL
What it is
NT-proBNP is a fragment released by the heart when its walls are stretched or under strain. It is a key marker of heart-pumping stress.
Why it matters
It helps detect and monitor heart failure and is used to assess shortness of breath.
What high values can mean
A higher value suggests the heart is under more strain, as in heart failure; levels also rise with age and reduced kidney function.
What low values can mean
A lower value makes significant heart strain less likely.
How to improve it
NT-proBNP follows heart health; managing blood pressure, heart conditions and fluid balance as advised is key.
Food & lifestyle
A heart-healthy pattern — less salt, regular activity, not smoking — supports the heart over time.
Preparing for the test
A blood test; fasting is not usually required — follow your lab's instructions.
When to talk to a doctor
Seek prompt care for severe breathlessness; discuss an elevated NT-proBNP with a doctor.
