What it is
MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) is the average concentration of hemoglobin within your red blood cells.
Why it matters
It complements MCV and MCH in describing red cells and classifying anemia.
What high values can mean
A higher value is uncommon and can be seen in certain conditions where red cells are denser or rounder.
What low values can mean
A lower value suggests red cells are paler than usual, often in iron-deficiency anemia.
How to improve it
As with the other indices, treating the underlying iron or vitamin issue is what normalises MCHC.
Food & lifestyle
A balanced diet with adequate iron, B12 and folate supports healthy red-cell hemoglobin.
Preparing for the test
Part of a complete blood count (CBC); fasting is not required.
When to talk to a doctor
Interpreted by a doctor alongside the rest of the CBC rather than alone.
