Metabolic
HOMA-IR
LOINC 98979-8 · ratio
What it is
HOMA-IR is a calculated index of insulin resistance, worked out from your fasting glucose and fasting insulin together.
Why it matters
It estimates how well your body responds to insulin, an early window into metabolic health before glucose rises.
What high values can mean
A higher value suggests more insulin resistance — your body needs more insulin to manage blood sugar.
What low values can mean
A lower value suggests good insulin sensitivity.
How to improve it
Weight management, regular activity, a lower-refined-carb diet and good sleep are the most effective ways to improve insulin sensitivity.
Food & lifestyle
Fibre-rich whole foods, vegetables and protein help; sugary drinks, refined carbs and excess calories worsen resistance.
Preparing for the testFasting required
Requires fasting glucose and insulin drawn together — do not eat for 8–12 hours beforehand.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss a high HOMA-IR with a doctor as part of your overall metabolic risk.
