Kidney
eGFR
LOINC 33914-3 · mL/min/1.73m2
What it is
eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) estimates how much blood your kidneys filter each minute, calculated from creatinine, age and sex.
Why it matters
It is the main number used to stage kidney function, where higher is better.
What high values can mean
A higher value means strong filtering capacity, which is what you want.
What low values can mean
A lower value means the kidneys are filtering less; persistently low values define chronic kidney disease.
How to improve it
Controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, staying hydrated and avoiding kidney-stressing medications protect eGFR.
Food & lifestyle
A balanced diet, good hydration and not smoking support kidney health; tailor protein and salt with a clinician if eGFR is low.
Preparing for the test
Calculated from a blood creatinine; fasting is not specifically required — follow your lab.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss a low or falling eGFR with a doctor to understand and protect your kidney function.
